BOXING.
RECORD CHAMPIONSHIP ENTRIES,
"The indoor sporting event of the year" is the title which the promoters give the Auckland provincial amateur boxing championships, which will be staged . at the Town Hall next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. The event brings together ring athletes from every nook and corner of the province. The number of entries from country centres for this year's tournament is greater than usual and, judging by some of the performances which these country boxers have (put up, it is quite likely that they will give the Auckland amateurs some surprises.
Throughout the winter, and .particularly in the last month, gymnasiums have been very busy. Novices have been .briskly polishing up their style and adding Co their knowledge, while the experienced boxers have been endeavouring to correct their faults and improve their punching power and boxing skill, all with the object of winning in their respective classes at the championship tournament. And now, with only a few days to go, and with the hard grind of training practically completed, all ere keen to step into the ring and put their new knowledge and greater experience to the test. The championships always mark a period of great entertainment. for lovers of the sport and with three nights of hard fighting before the new champions are found, it can be predicted that this year will not be an exception. A man who would not be satisfied with more than 70 lights in three nights would indeed bo a difficult man to please and therefore, with this point in view, and taking into consideration the rapid come-back in 'popularity which marked boxing this.year, it is confidently expected 1 at. next week's tournament will be the : ost successful that lias yet been staged.
