CYCLING.

WITH THE AMATEURS. 1

lynndAee club successes. '

On Saturday last 16 Lynndale .cyclists took part in the junior and senior races conducted by the Auckland Centre, and again Lynndale was to the fore when Colin R. Gooder secured time honours in the senior race and Les. Whyle was pipped for time in the junior race by Is by a man off a mark. Lynndale has again increased its lead in the teams sheld, this lead now being 0.11 over Manukau. On Saturday the club had the fastest three riders —C. R. Gooder, 10. L. G. Hughes and W. T. Willis—whose collective time was Oh 24m 6s, against Manukau's Oh 28m 345. With two more centre races to go, Lynndale should just about hold their own, the next race being a time trial around the harbour course, and the final, the 100-miler. So if Gooder, Hughes, Willis and S. Alderson and the rest of the other members ride in these two races the club, already with a handsome lead, should just about manage to lift this shield for the first time from Manukau, who have never been beaten.

Colin R. Gooder (scr) secured time in 2h 6m 30s—a very good time for the day, as the wind was only an advantage over the last five miles. Coming up the straight into a strong head wind, four scratch men were together, having a ding-dong go for seventeenth place and time honours. Triner led out, but C. Gooder won by three lengths from Triner, with Cochrane third and Graham Hughes fourth. The latter again disappointed in his final ril'ort: he should have been closer to Gooder than he was. Graham went a good race, and the next centre race should he well within his grasp, as he easily won his own club nnpaced championship. Gooder was full of praise for Cochrane for the way lie rides his races. During the race Gooder at one stage made three attempts to take his lap._ but Cochrane would not allow him, being content to take the pace himself. Haddon Hawke, winner of two big races this season, was tenth, beating his comarker Lanpridge in by two lengths. These two were off 11.30.

Les. Whyle, scratch junior, won the sprint between the scratch men, but was beaten by Middleton off a mark by Is in the junior championship. A fortnight ago these two were equal fourth. This is the second centre race in which Les. has been beaten by Is for time. In this race Les. turned the tables on Bert Baldwin, who was two lengths away, the third scratch man.

On Saturday the seniors will race for the Hughes Cup, over 18 miles (four laps), and the juniors for the military hair brushes, over 9 miles (two laps). The usual trophy orders are in addition to these two special trophies. On Monday night a general club meeting will be held at the secretary's residence,to make final arrangements for the club harbour race on August 22. Other urgent business will also bo considered.

TAKAPUNA CLUB. K. Langridge (11.30) and D. Keating and E. Williams (14.30) were the only riders of tlie above club to take part in the round-the-harbour event. Of these three, two finished in the first dozen men home out of 70 odd starters. D. Keating has been showing good form in club events, and it was very pleasing to see him finish in eighth position in 139.36. , E. Langridge, tlie Auckland junior champion (whose sole experience in a distance raco started and ended in the Orewa event), found the going tough, but gave a very creditable performance, finishing in tenth pluco in 137.10.

In tile junior event of 13V4 miles, K. Yosper was the first Takapuna rider to show up. Ken, riding from the 6.0 mark, finished sixth in 41.5. L. Credin (3.30) was next, finishing eighth in 39.5, followed by D. Bowsie. his co-marker, whose placing was ninth. Competing in the centre events has given these juniors confidence in their ability to stay with the riders of the larger clubs. As the majority of the Takapuna events have been held over the flat lake circuit, the work of these youngsters on the hills is satisfactory.

The event next Saturday is a "combined" of six laps (22% miles), to be held on the lake circuit, for the Rainger Cup.

The centre has laid down a strict rule that in future no rider shall be allowed to compete in a centre event unless he is wearing the registered colours of his club. The uniform to be worn by Takapuna riders is as follow:—Wine red sweater, crossed by 3in gold sash, and black shorts.
