VALUELESS CHEQUES
SALESMAN SENTENCED.

HAMILTON, Tuesday
Leslie Alfred John Walters, aged 33, a salesman, of Botorua, with four aliases, pleaded guilty in the Police Court to-day to four charges of obtaining monej r and .goods by fraud by the issue of valueless cheques totalling £24 at Cambridge, Wanganui and Auckland. Detective-Sergeant Thompson said the accused had a formidable list since 192.5, and had been discharged from prison onlv on June 20.
Counsel attributed Walters' lapse to drink and ill-healtli.
In sentencing the accused to reformative <letention for a period not exceedinging two years, the magistrate, Mr. S. L. Paterson, disbelieved that the offences were due to liquor, as they disclosed planning. He promised to make representations to the Prisons Board for Walters' release to go to England, where he was promised work by a relative.
