CASE OF HAIRDRESSERS. EFFECT OF EARLIER ORDER. (By Telegraph.—l'ress Association.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Y\ hen the hairdressers' unions throughout New, Zealand claimed a 40-hour week in tlie Arbitration Court to-day, Mr. J. Barnett, of Christchurcji, who appeared for the Canterbury and Southland hairdressers, withdrew the applications of the unions lie represented. The claims of the Wellington and Otago male hairdressers and those of female workers throughout Xew Zealand were proceeded with, but when the application of the Wellington hairdressers was called later it was withdrawn. Mr. Barnett said that the decision of the Court regarding hours in the grocery trade had decided the unions he represented to withdraw their applications. Jn reply to Mi. .Justice I'age, he said he understood that the awards would l>e amended to provide for a 44-hour week.

WESTPORT COLLERIES

40-HOUR WEEK GRANTED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Applications fur exemption from a 40-hour week were made by the Westport Coal Company's Coke Ovens and Smokeless Fuel and Briquettes. Canterbury, Limited, in the Arbitration Court to-day. In the ease of the Westport Coal Company, the Court fixed a 40-hour week with the right to work the ovens on .Saturdays and. reserved its decision in the other case.

COST OF SHORTER WEEK.

EXTRA £50,000 IX DUXEDIX. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNE DIN, Tuesday. The' financing of the 40-hour week is the most important question to be considered by the Dunedin City Council at present. The additional expenditure resulting from the 40-hour week will probably amount to £.>O,OOO. A portion of this, it is expected, will be returned in increased revenue from various departments consequent on better spending power, increased city valuations, and a decrease in amounts outstanding in rates.
