MOUNT EDEN

The Mount Eden Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. T. McNab, presiding.

It was decided to appoint Mr. C. P. Harper, of Devonport, as building and ! traffic inspector. The Mayor said that it would be necessary to provide a car, and j a committee was appointed to confer with the inspector and select one. It was decided to congratulate the Mayor of Mount Albert, Mr. R. E. Ferner, on his ui>pointment to the magisterial bench. HENDERSON TOWN BOARD. The monthly general meeting of the Henderson Town Board last night was presided over by Air. H. Xorcross. Roads and Footpaths.—The foreman's report on roads and footpaths was accepted, and repairs were authorised aecoi'dingly. Drivers' Licenses. —The traffic inspector reported a further issue of drivers' licenses dining July, making n total which compared favourably with that of previous years. Registration of Bicycles.-—lt was suggested that steps should be taken to institute the registration of bicycles in the Town Board district as a possible means of checking the practise of riding on footpaths. The town clerk was requested to seek the co-operation of the Waitemata County Council in the matter. Shelter Shed. —Suggestions and plans for a proposed waiting sued for bus pas- , sengers,' on the corner of Lincoln Road i and Swanson Road, were discussed. The matter was deferred pending the receipt of tenders.

Sale of Property—An offer of £150 for a piece of the board's land was deferred for consideration at a special meeting. Metropolitan Committee.—Notification was received from his Worship the Mayor of Auckland of the formation of a permanent metropolitan committee, outlining its scope and function. The board was invited to appoint a representative deleRate. Intimation was also given of the date of the Auckland Centennial Conference. THAMES VALLEY POWER BOARD. Mr. Joseph Price presided on Tuesday at the August meeting of the Thames Valley Electric Power Board. Street Lighting.—The Wailli Borough Council wrote stating it had been decided to install electric light in place of gas for streets. The engineer reported that a conference had been held, when 76 more .street lights were asked for. The estimated cost of giving the supply was £1400, and it would be quite safe for the board to proceed with the extensions applied for. The engineer's recommendation was adopted.

Extension.—From the settlers in the JVlangatarata-Mahuta "Roads a petition for supply was received, property owners agreeing to guarantee the sum required. The engineer reported that the revenue offered, £222 5/, was sufficient to warrant the expenditure.

Tokoroa Canvass. —The engineer stated that a recent canvass of the Tokoroa district had been completed, and if the settlers signed up the guarantees the scheme would now be payable. It was resolved that the matter be proceeded with.

Finance Committee.—The special finance committee recommended that the board should apply to the Loan's Board for additional loan moneys, and that the street lighting work in the Waihi Borough be proceeded with as soon as the necessary arrangefnents are made.

Manager's Report.—Mr. R. Sprague reported the revenue for the past quarter was £35,113 and expenditure £36.327, leaving a debit of £1213. The increase in electricity sales amounted to £447. Lighting showed a decrease of £223 and factories (ex three-party) £577. The principal increase under the heading of expenditure was power purchases, amounting to £10(10. Administration showed an increase of £441, of which £318 was due to the loan poll costs on the £75,000 loan proposals. One hundred consumers had additional lighting and heating connections made. The new connections from April 1 to .Tulv 31 exceed any previous period totals and demand for new supply is being received daily, necessitating engaging additional labour.

Engineer's Report.—Mr. N. G. McLeod reported that the past month had been a very trying one for the whole staff, owing to the sustained rush of work. In the house wiring branch the services of two further contractors were enlisted in order to cope with the work offering.
