GENERAL RATE STRUCK.
SOUTHLAND DECISION'.

INVERCARGILL, this day. Notice of intention to strike a general Tate of a halfpenny in the £ on tie unimproved value was given bv the Southland Electric Power Board at its meeting to-day. A decision made i a committee to hold a referendum on the proposal that the Government should, take over under certain conditions the Southland electric power scheme was revealed later by remarks made in open meeting.
The decision to give notice of the striking of the rate was qualified bv a special order that the unreticuiated ratepayers would he required to p av only a sixth of the rate. The board at a previous meeting had decided not to strike a rate.
