MORE CRITICISM.
STATUE IN THE DOMAIN
"DISGUSTING, NOT ART."
Still further criticism has been levelled at the much-discussed statue over the Domain gates. "If Christians do not take action in this matter we will got no further," said Mi. T. Caley at a meeting of the Council of Christian Congregations last night. „"It is not art; it is just disgusting." This, however, was not a unanimous opinion. "It is a disgrace if our youth are to be Tared with this thing all their lives," Mr. Caley said. lie thought that the council should move in the matter. Tho longer tho statue stayed up the harder it would lie to have it removed. His view was supported by Pastor YV. Campbell. The chairman, the Rev. J. A. Thompson, said that if the meeting wished to forward a motion it was in order for them to do so. In the view of Mr. E. Smith', the whole thing would have been all right had it not been for the criticism in the columns of the Press. He understood that the Auckland Grammar School memorial was surmounted by a nude figure. The Rev. K. D. Patchett: The Domain statue is a nine days' wonder. It would be a mistake if this council were to add to its notoriety. There then ensued a littlo silence, after which the chairman said that the next business would be proceeded with, as there was no motion before the meeting. "All right," rejoined Mr. Caley. "To test the feeling here, I will move that we try to have the objectionable parts of the statue covered." Pastor Campbell seconded. All amendment was moved that the matter be referred back to the executive council. This was seconded and carried without discussion, the only persons voting against it being Messrs. Caley and Campbell.
