TIMBER AND CARGO, £400.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, this day. The remains of the wrecked steamer Abel Tasman and the cargo were auctioned this morning, being purchased by a Greymouth syndicate. *
The ship was sold for £IGO and the cargo, including 800,000 ft of timber, for £400. In spite of a large attendance there were few bidders.
The intercolonial cargo steamer Abel Tasman, of 2047 tons gross, belonging to H. C. Sleigh Coasters Proprietary, Ltd., Melbourne, was wrecked on July 18 at the Grey Biver bar under#most tmusiml circumstances. The vessel parted her moorings at a coal berth at Greymouth, and, in spite of gallant efforts by the crew to beach her, the vessel drifted down the river and over the bar. Finally, she was thrown liy heavy seas on to the North Beach, and became a total wreck. The crew were brought safely ashore.
