CENTENNIAL.
MARLBOROUGH'S MEMORIAL. A PROVINCIAL BUILDING. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) BLENHEIM, Friday. If approved by the Government, Marlborough's provincial. memorial for the New Zealand Centennial will take tho shape of a provincial Centennial building, in which the offices of the borough and county councils will be housed, and which will provide general facilities for provincial administrative requirements. The scheme was approved as a suitable memorial by a representative conference last evening, when delegates were appointed to the national conference at Wellington on August 20. The delegates will be the Mayors of Blenheim and Picton, and the chairmen of the Marlborough and Awatere County Councils, with one deputising for the Kaikoura County Council. »
Mention was made at the meetine that Marlborough might be considered to have some claim to Centennial celebrations, such as those to be held at Akaroa, in view of the fact that sovereignty over New Zealand was first proclaimed by Captain Cook in 1771 at Motuara island, at the entrance to Queen Charlotte' Sound. This matter will be brouglit to the f notice of the Government by the delegates.
