FORGERY ALLEGED.
LABOURER SENT FOR TRIAL.
SIGNATURE OF WITNESS,
Appearing before Messrs. L. S. Rickerby and G. Magee, J.P.'s in the Police Court yesterday afternoon, Frank Robertshaw, labourer, pleaded not guilty to a charge of forgery, and was remanded to the Supremo Court for trial. It was alleged that he signed the name of J. Guilding as witness to a document purporting to be an authority from his wife, January Kura Robertshaw. for him to draw the full amount of his earnings while employed by the Public Works Department.
Jorn Guilding, a chef, said that accused married a cousin of his. and now resided at 110, Kiwi Road) Point Chevalier. He did not give accused any authority to sign his name to any document, and the signature on the document produced was not his.
An officer of the Auckland Labour Bureau, 11. F. Stewart, said that when asked about the authority, aecuscd admitted having forged the signatures of his wife and a witness on it, and wrote an admission to that effect. The result of the authority was that accused had drawn £7 15/9 that should have been paid to his wife. . •"£ '$•
In answer to Mr. Noble, witness said that the £7 15/9 should have been paid to Robertshaw's wife on behalf of their two children, not for Mrs. Robertshaw's own use. r
Constable Hodge produced a statement obtained from accused in Morrinsville, in which accused said he had his wife's permission to sign her name to the authority.
Senior Detective S. G. Hall, said accused had appeared on summons and he had no objections to him being allowed bail on a nominal surety. He said that £25 would be sufficient. Accused was granted bail in that amount.
