£84,000 WATER PLAN.
HAURAKI PLAINS SUPPLY.
GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE,
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
PAEROA, Friday
Obstacles in the way of the Hauraki Plains County Council's water supply scheme proposals have been removed by the Government following representations to the Minister of Finance by the county chairman, Mr. C. W. Parfitt. and the member for the district. Mr. J. Thorn. The proposal has been under discussion for some years, the estimated cost being £84.000, of which the settlers are to find £55,000.
The Minister has now advised Mr. Thorn that the Employment Division lias agreed and that lie liai* approved that if the council makes application for a reduction in the number of men to be taken from the unemployment register from SO per cent to 50 per cent, the necessary permission will be given. Further, in the event of there being no registered unemployed at anv time before the work is finished, arrangements will be made for a subsidy to be granted.
The council lias commenced the necessary procedure to constitute the water supply district and to submit a loan poll. The Minister's decision will probably result in the water supply being given at a cost of 2/ per acre.
