TROTTING.

NOTES ON FORM. BEDFORD'S GOOD EFFORT. FINISHED ON WELL. | After spelling for just on twelve months | Bedford had the first race of his career when he finished a splendid second to Hearsay in the Innovation Handicap at the recent Waikato meeting, his performance being all the more meritorious in eo far as lie was suffering from a very severe cold. The outing undoubtedly worked great improvement in him, as he paraded in great order for his engagement in the Mangere Handicap on the opening day of the Auckland meeting. He was at a fair price in the betting. Bedford was _ not as smart away as usual, with the result that he was about five lengths away from the leader, Sir Frank, when the last half-mile was entered upon. Bedford finished very resolutely from th» home turn, and overhauling Sir Frank and Tollgate at every stride just got up in time to dead-heat with the former. On the strength of the performance he came in for solid support in the Suburban Handicap on the second day. He broke at the start, and lost several lengths, and when he did settle down his driver rushed him up into third place. However, with just on four ftirlongs to go the black gelding broke again, and this completely finished every chance he possessed. Bedford is a very promising improving pacer by Blue Mountain King from Nancy Bell, and when he gains a little more experience he should be a very payable proposition for his owner, Mr. F. Herring, jun.

BROKE EACH DAY. ' The Aehhurst-trained pacer Claudelande was solidly backed in both of his races at the Auckland meeting, but ruined whatever chances he had on either day by breaking at the start. Last Saturday in the Mangere Handicap he showed brilliant speed over the first mile, but the effort was too much, and he stopped badly in the straight. Claudelands is a very sort, and he should not be long in making amends. WAS STAYING ON. Royal Jewel was only raced once at the Auckland meeting, competing in the Suburban Handicap on the second day. In the race the bay pacer was a trifle slow away, but did not lose much ground. However, his driver... did not bustle him over the early stages, and with three furlongs to go he was standing the leader, Munga Tangi, up a good start. He finished on solidly in fourth place, and j wab closer at the finish than at any other stage. Royal Jewel is not living up to the fine promise, he showed in his first couple of races, but lie has only started on four occasions, and it may be unwise to forget • him. | WILL WIN MORE RACES. Although Munga Tangi failed to gain a place in the Mangere Handicap on the first day of the Auckland meeting, he was noticed finishing 011 solidly 111 fifth place as the field passed tile post. Produced in the Suburban Handicap on the second day, Jie was very confidently backed, and duly materialised by scoring very nicely over the last furlong. Munga Tangi has won twice in his last t'hree starts, and the impressive way in which lie has run out the last furlong of his races suggests that he should not be troubled when called upon to race over two miles. Munga Tangi is a four-year-old black gelding by Blue Mountain King from Happy Chimes, and is trained at Epsom by L. Laver. He should gain more than liis share of prize money in the new season.
