LIVE STOCK MARKET

EXPORT VALUES FAIR.

BUTTER PRICES LOWER.

MILD WINTER WEATHER.

Since last review the export markets have been fairly steady, with the exception of dairy produce. Butter has failed to hold the full extent of the recent advances and cheese, too, has eased in sympathy. Smithfield. reports, on the other hand, are quite good. Almost all classes are meeting with a good demand at full late rates. An exception is chilled beef, which is easier owing to increased supplies and warm weather. Freezing works are at a . slack period just now. Supplies of all the main lines have come close to the vanishing point and the bobby calf, trade has scarcely commenced. Weather conditions have been very favourable from the farmers' standpoint. The frosty spell has 1 been succeeded by intervals of showery weather, with temperatures generally mild for this season of the year.. Stock is wintering well. Of conditions in the country, our Waikato correspondent writes: — Quiet in the Country. "This has been a comparatively quiet week so far as the stock markets are concerned. 4 "Beef, which last week had shown slight signs of improving, has held its own, while the tone in the dairy sales has decidedly improved. Many graziers are arixious to get 'their consignments of chilling cattle away at the earliest opportunity to ma,ke room, no doubt, for stores, and it seems agreed that anyone who can purchase their store cattle before the spring demands set in will have the benefit of the lower winter price, for there are definite indications that all classes of store_ cattle will be extremely hard to get in the spring. . "In the sheep sections, while an improvement has been noticeable with both ewe and wether mutton while supplies are comparatively short, there is every indication that increased prices for both these classes will be in evidence during the next few weeks. Fat lambs, which are mostly .lbs-orbed by the exporters, have shown little or 110 alteration. _ There is a decidedly good inquiry for ail ciasses of breeding ewes, and at a sale held during the week, where several lines of East Coast sheep were offered, advanced prices were realised. During the coming week an offering of genuinely-farmed ewes will be submitted to the public, and it will be very interesting to see the values which are placed upon them. _ "Only small business is being transacted in the pig section, this, no doubt, being due to the lateness of the year, but the inquiry, especially for heavy baconers and porkers, still holds good and good prices are being realised at all sales. An improvement in stores and weaners can also be recorded, and this, no doubt, will continue as further supplies of milk are available. FAT STOCK SCHEDULE.
