NEW EAST COAST ROAD.
HEAVY TOWING CHARGES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) OrOTIKI, Monday. Complaints have been made that motorists using the new East Coast Road to Cape Runaway have been charged an excessive price by Maoris for towing motor vehicles through the Raukokore • River. Owing to the river having again changed its course since additions were made to the low-lavel bridge the bridge has been left high and dry, with the river running at one side. Pending the erection of a permanent structure on another site for which plans are now being prepared motorists using the road and tourists will be compelled to rely 011 being towed across the river. In the meantime the Opotiki County Council has decided to request natives to reduce the towing charge from 10/ to 5/. The Main Highways Board is also to be asked if it will subsidise the cost of negotiating the river until the new bridge is erected.
