POLICE ASSAULTED.
YOUNG MAN'S BIRTHDAY. MAGISTRATE'S "PRESENT." (By Telegraph.—Press .Association.) WANGANUI, this day. Victor Thomas Manssen, aged 21, was fined £5 to-day, in default 14 days' imprisonment, by Mr. .T. 11. Salmon, S.M., for disorderly conduct, and a similar penalty for assaulting Constable Fleming in the execution of his duty. Counsel for accused said the occasion was Manssen's 21st birthday, and lie had had some drink. The magistrate intimated that in view of accused's previous good character he would not inflict imprisonment, but he would certainly impose a penalty that would remind him of his 21st birthday.
