LIBERAL SETBACK.
CANADIAN GOVERNMENT. OTTAWA, June 12. The Canadian Government was dealt a heavy blow by the hostile Conservative majority in the Senate when it rejected a bill proposing to amend the British North America Act, which is the virtual Constitution of the Dominion. The Government proposed through amendments to give the provinces the right to impose taxes directly in order to meet debts and to supply money for relief. It was also proposed to set up a Dominion Loan Council, under which all provincial loans would be controlled. Mr. Arthur Meighcn, Conservative leader in the Senate, insisted that direct taxation for the provinces would wreck the confederation. "PROSPERITY BONDS." NOT WANTED IN ALBERTA. "CALGARY, June 12. Ihe Alberta branch of the Canadian Manufacturers' Association has notified the Premier, Mr. William Aberhart. that the prosperity bonds which he proposes to issue as a medium of exchange will not be accepted by business firms. The bonds are really scrip on which each recipient affixes stamps. The issue is termed an ''intolerable turnover J tax." 1
