ONE UNION.
EMPLOYEES OF BOROUGHS
MOUNT ALBERT'S DECISION. Support of a move by the Napiei Borough Council, which has requested the Municipal Association to take the necessary steps to enable one union, covering all outside municipal workers, to be formed, was given by the Mount Albert Borough Council last night. A letter received from the Napier Borough Council stated that the employees had requested the council to take the necessary steps to form a local body ( cnt* ployees' union throughout New Zealand.
In moving that the council support the scheme, the Mayor, Mr. R. Ferner, said that it was important that the council's interests should be looked after in these days of collective bargaining. He thought the council should express itself as favourable towards one union for the borough employees. The council could then be represented when any awards were sought.
Mr. F. E. Martin said the matter was not within the province of local bodies, and whether the various workers formed separate unions or joined up in one big union was entirely a matter for the trades unions. It was not right for local bodies to dictate to the workers how they should organise.
