AN INQUIRY.
AUCKLAND REQUEST.
GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL. LABOUR DEPARTMENT. ■In response to a recent request made to the Minister of Labour, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, by the Auckland Trades and Labour Council, Mr. T. Pound, inspector from the head office of the Department of Lands and Survey Wellington, is at present in Auckland making an investigation into the working of the Auckland oflice of the Labour Department.
Mr. Pound, who was directed to come to Auckland by the Public Service Commissioner, consulted the secretary of the Trades and Labour Council, Mr. H. Campbell, this week with the object of receiving: from him specific cases of "unsatisfactory methods and . delays" complained of. The council's letter to the Minister asked for the institution of an inquiry into "the delay and unsatisfactory methods of dealing with complaints" sent into the Auckland office of his Department. "Complaints are sometimes held up for months," the letter added. "In some cases back wages are collected but no prosecution taken, and when the complaints are finalised the union making them is not notified as to the outcome." Questioned this afternoon concerning the nature of his investigations, Mr. Pound had 110 comment to make, although he indicated that his report would be submitted in due course to the Public Service Commissioner. He expects to be engaged in Auckland until the end of the present week.
