WHEEL AND TRACK NOTES.

AUCKLAND CLUB. Acceptances for the first day of the Auckland Trotting Club's winter meeting* will close with the secretary, Mr. A. G. Mabee, Durham Street, at 5 p.m. on Friday. A TRIFLE DISAPPOINTING. When Baron Alfonso won at the Auckland Christmas meeting it was confidently expected that the bay gelding would continue to race prominently, but apart from a success at the Wanganui meeting at Easter his form has been very disappointing. However, it must be admitted that he has lost a lot of ground at the start of most of his races, and this has added considerably to his tasks. He has invariably been found finishing on in great style, and he gives the impression that he will develop into a good stayer, but his barrier manners will have to improve before he can be trusted to go correctly all the way. The son of Frank Worthy figures off the limit of the Hobson Handicap on the first day of the Auckland meeting, and a reliable beginning would see him taking a good deal of beating.

MAY NOT STAND. According to Southern reports Rod Shadow is shaping up satisfactorily on the light tasks allotted him, but the test Will come later on. His hind legs are heavily bandaged, and the prospects of Ins standing a preparation do not appear bright. A CONSISTENT NOVICE. Aerial Bell is again nominated in the novice and improvers' races at the Auckland meeting, and she is assured of her share of support. She is one of the most reliable and consistent novices about, but it does not seem to matter how well she races, there is always one or two better on the day. ('. O. U'O has spent a lot of time on the mare, and he has had an exasperating run with her, bnt the end of the lane must bo readied, and maybe it will be her turn next week. WON LAST START. While there is no doubting the fine speed possessed by Cherrill, there is nlwnys a chance that the bay pacer may make a mistake at the start, and this is the reason that she has returned such useful dividends when she has been successful. At the last Waikato meeting Cherrill started in the Farewell Handicap, a. mile saddle event. Beginning smartly she ran to the front at the end of three furlongs, and from then never looked in danger of defeat, and finally ran home an easy winner by three lengths, it was a very stylish effort. She lias gone on the right way since, and has been showing her customary line speed in her training essays. Cherrill claims an engagement in the Hobson Handicap on the first day of the Auckland meeting, and will compete off 24yds. It is a -well-balanced field, but Cherrill would only have to make a reasonably smart beginning to play a prominent' part.
