"SON OF HEAVEN."
JAPANESE EMPEROR'S NEW TITLE. TOKYO. In treaties and all official documents henceforth the Japanese Emperor will bo designated "Nippon Koku Tenno,", which literally means "Japanese Nation's Son of Heaven." The term hitherto used was "Nippon Koku Kotei," literally "Japanese Nation's Sovereign." Kotei is still applied without disrespect to King Edward and other monarchs. the term Tenno being the. exclusive designation of Japan's "Monarch Descended from the Sun Goddess."
• In foreign translations the Emperor of Japan will still be the'correct official usage.
