CENSUS TRENDS.

NEW ZEALAND CITIES.

OFFICIAL FIGURES QUOTED. AUCKLAND'S POSITION. The growth of the'population of New Zealand is shown in the first official publication of census results in the monthly Abstract of Statistics for May. A coincidence shown in the returns is that the urban populations of Invercargill are exactly the same, the residents in each case numbering 25,701. While Invercargill has increased its population since the 1926 census, it is interesting to note that the population of Wanganui has decreased by 027. Auckland city and suburbs heads the list with a population of 211,913 as against 193,385 in 192(3. In only two cases —Newmarket and Northcote —have the number, of residents decreased. So far as Newmarket is concerned the. decrease no doubt can be attributed to some extent to the removal of the railway workshops some years ago from the borough to Otaliuliu. The figures for Auckland are as follows: — Auckland. • 1020. Auckland City 102,080 90,0-7 Blrkcnheud Borough ... 3,399 3,020 Northcote Borough .... 2,809 2,374 Ta ka pun;!
