SLAVERY REPORT.
SUBMITTED BY ITALY. League Council Attaches Significant "Tag." LIVELY ARGUMENT AT GENEVA British Official Wireless. (Received 12.30 p.m.) RUGBY, May 13. During a two-hour sitting the League Council at Geneva hurried through a long agenda at top speed. It has now adjourned until June 15. There was a lively argument, it is stated, in the course of the private session regarding a report submitted to the Slavery Committee by the Italian Government. According to Press telegrams, the upshot was that the report is to be circularised to members of the Slavery Committee with a note attached that the contents have been communicated by a military authority occupying foreign territory in violation of the Covenant. The main business at the public session was the offer of seats on the Council to China, as representative of Asia, and to some one of the smaller European Powers not belonging to one of the already recognised regional groups. This recommendation was referred to the Assembly for consideration in September. The British Foreign Secretary, Mr. Anthony Eden, who is president of the Council, had another busy day at Geneva. He saw the Rumanian Foreign Minister and the Greek representative, M. Politis, as well as Mr. Sean Lester, League High Commissioner for Danzig, and Herr Gressler, President of the Danzig Senate. It is reported that the Council this evening appointed Mr. Lester High Commissioner for another year on the request both of the Danzig Senate and the Polish Government.
