ASSAULT CHARGE.

TWO MEN FOR TRIAL. INTENT TO ROB ALLEGED. INCIDENTS IN STREET. (By Telegraph. —Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Charged jointly with assaulting Harry Meyer on April 18 with intent to rob, George Edward Allen, aged 38, labourer and Martin Carr, aged 33, labourer, appeared before Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., to-day. Meyer said that lie was entering his gate in Ghuznee Street about 0.30 p.m. when someone caught him Iby the coat and hit him under the jaw. He fell down, and someone tried to get at his pocket. He cried out, and his wife opened the door. The man ran away, and witness pursued him. He saw two men running and followed them into Cuba Street. He met another man and explained the position to him, and they both followed the men to the corner of Dixon Street, where witness left and went to the Taranaki- Street police station. Thomas Henry Johnson gave evidence of having had his attention taken up with two young men, who seemed fairly drunk, outside the Alhambra Hotel in Cuba Street. Two others, whom he recognised as accused, were also there, and a man was with them who also appeared drunk. This man went ,up to the two others when they reached Dixon Street and accosted them as if looking for an argument. Then Allen rushed up to the two drunken men arid put his arms round them, appearing to witness as if "fanning" one of their pockets. Witness went on to tell how he followed the accused men and saw them interfere with another man. Later, in Ghuznee Street, he saw them come running back, and Allen looked back and said, "He's coming." Meyer came up, and witness and Meyer followed them. Witness sent Meyer for the police while lie kept the two in view. Witness saw Allen stop another old man, who apparently was drunk, and, following them further, was joined by Meyer and a policeman. The two accused were then in conversation with another old man in Vivian Street. The constable went up, and Carr made an attempt to move oil". He was stopped, but when the constable turned to Allen, Carr got away. Allen was taken into custody. Witness told of how lie identified Carr in Court last week, when Allen was up. Allen and Carr both pleaded not guilty and were committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
