CITY MILK SUPPLY.
As one having some knowledge of the subject of milk production and town supply both in England and Xcw Zealand over a period of about 50 years, may I express my opinion that Auckland's present supply system needs reform. The Milk Council's latest proposal to burden consumers to the extent ofi about £7000 per year prompts me to suggest that the Government's avowed object is to raise our standard of living and any reduction of unnecessary cost is a step towards that end. In England vendors take their milk from the farms and usually pay tenpence per gallon during the spring and summer mouths, and 1/ per gallon during the winter. This is retailed at 4d per quart. Unfortunately there are always some bad debts in this business. A ticket system is needed here, also milk trains to collect from distant areas, say, Frankton and Dargaville. The inspectors should travel on such trains and take samples en route. Vendors could provide all milk to tho producing contractors and bear the cost of transit, and pay Sd per gallon on rail, and should be able to retail at 4d per quart. To the indigent the relieving bodies could issue tickets instead of cash for a supply of milk. A. V. PETTMAN.
