Mr. Justice Johnston arrived from the South this morning by train. The Hon. F. E. Lark, M.L.C., left for Wellington last night by train. The Hons. J. Trevethick and E. Dye were passengers from the South by the Limited express this morning. Mr. J. Doig, of Palmerston North, has been re-elected vice-president of the Amalgamated Society of Railway •Servants. Colonel J. Ramsay Tainsh, general manager of the Irak railways, arrived at Wellington to-day by the Wanganella from Sydney. Mr. T. E. Y. Seddon, chairman, and Dr. Marshall Macdonald and Mr. J. D. Harper, members of the War Pensionj Board, are in Hamilton. Captain R. C. Hammond, manager of the Northern Steamship Company, Limited, returned to Auckland yesterday after a visit to the South. Lieutenant-Commander C. H. Brooks, of the Royal Australian Navy, is a passenger on the Remuera, which is due at Wellington from London on Sunday. Mr. K. McKinney, of Auckland, has been appointed to the charge of the Tirau Presbyterian Church. The induction ceremony will be held on May 28. The Rev. Father Lyons, parish priest of Huntly for the past three years, has been transferred to Thames and will leave this week for his new charge. Mr. C. M. Turrell, director and general manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company, arrived in Auckland this morning and will remain here until 1 the end of the week. Mr. T. M. T. Jackson was yesterday admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court by Mr. Justice Callan, on the motion of Mr. F. L. G. West. Mr. Peter Lewis, of Wanganui, has •been asked by His Royal Highness the Duke of Counaught to accept promotion to the oflice of Past Grand Deacon in the English Grand Lodge of Freemasons.

Mr. and Mre. C. 11. Barton, who left in March on their return to Abyssinia, intend to remain at Aden meanwhile, according to cable advice received by tho secretary of the Sudan Interior Mission. Sir Walter Carncross, of the Legisj lative Council, has so far improved in health that he has been able to leave the Wellington private hospital of which he has been an inmate for some days. He hopes shortly to resume his duties. , Mr. D. A. Bird, of the Whangarei High School staff, has received notice of his appointment to the staff of the Ashburton Technical High School. Mr. Bird has been at Whangarei for the past 14 years and will leave to take up his new position at the end of this month. Mr. Alfred Hughes, of Melbourne, left by train last night for Wellington, where lie will join the Wanganella on his return to Australia. Mr. Hughes, who has been spending a three months' holiday in the Dominion, was formerly on the engineering staff of the Colonial Sugar Company, but is now living in Australia in retirement. Mr. C. G. Fraser, M.A., of the staff of the Oisborne High School, has been appointed as an assistant master at the Wanganui Technical College from 49 applicants. In both cricket and football he lias represented Poverty Bay and holds the Nev? Zealand University hlue in hockey, in which garrje he has also represented the North Island. Mr. L. W. Tiller, of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, is soon to proceed to Great Britain as scientific observer of experimental fruit shipments that are being carried by the Port Nicholson. Mr. Tiller, who is asistant manager of the Government research orchard, Nelson, will later spend some time in the principal English research stations in refrigeration and horticulture.
