DROWNING FEARED.
MISSING FROM SHIP.
SEAMAN OF CUTTER REWA. ! POLICE DRAGGING FOR. BODY. A seaman, employed as a member of the crew of the small cutter Rewa, is missing, and it is feared that he has been drowned after falling overboard from the vessel, which is moored off Orakei. The missing man is Cuthbert Carson, aged 27, of 24, Dunedin Street, Ponsonby. This morning four policemen were engaged in dragging for the body in the vicinity of the Eewa, but so far there is no trace of Mr. Carson. Owned hj Nobels Explosives Company, Limited, the crew of the Rewa comprised Captain A. ■ E. Paterson, master, and Mr. Carson. Both master and mate came ashore in the cutter's dinghy on Monday night, Mr. Carson rowing back to the ship to take over his duties of nightwatchman. Captain Peterson arranged with Mr. Carson to row ashore at 8 a.m. yesterday to take him back to the cutter, but Mr. Carson did not make an appearance. Investigations made yesterday showed that Mr. Carson did not sleep on the .Rewa on Monday night, and that supper had been prepared, but not eaten. Tied to the Rewa's stern was the dinghy. The matter was reported to the police, who began a search for the mate. It is thought that Mr. Carson, wh© was not a good swimmer, might have fallen over the bulwarks, which are only 20in in height, and been drowned.
