NEW SCENIC ROAD.

EAST COAST ROUTE. Advice as to the condition of the coastal road from Opotiki to Te Araroa has been received by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce from a local firm whose traveller recently traversed the route. The report states that the road is now good practically all the way. It is in first-class order for some distance up to Raukokore. Between Cape Runaway and Hicks' Bay there are nine miles of road still unmetalled. Of this portion, however, a contract has defiinitely been let for metalling, seven miles and a half. Between Hicks' Bay and Te Araroa the Public Works Department is erecting one bridge, but there are still two or three streams that require to be bridged and which will make the road impassable during wet . weather conditions, when the rivers are in flood. Some of the scenery on the coastal road is stated to be unsurpassed anywhere in New Zealand.
