NEW NUMBER-PLATES.

REGISTRATION OF CARS.

WORK BEGUN THIS MORNING.

The relicensing of motor vehicles for the year 1930-37 began this morning at the bureau in the Wellesley Street Post Office, and it is expected that about 300 applications will be dealt with during the day. Motorists are required under the regulations to have the new plates, which have black figures on a yellow background, fixed by June 1. Including motor cycles and commercial vehicles, there are over 20,000 motor vehicles registered in Auckland at present. Extra staff is stationed at the licensing bureau, and the Automobile Association (Auckland) will open on Monday a temporary office near the bureau. This will be for the convenience of association members, who may fill in the necessary forms and return later to collect the new plates. The forms are a little simpler this year. That on which application is made for the new number-plates is divided into two sections, and private car and cycle owners do not need to complete the second portion. They are also not required, as in previous years, to state the seating accommodation of their cars, the mileage covered in the last year, and the liorse-power.

No change has been made in the form ancl questions for owners' nomination of a company for third-party insuiance. The fee for relicensing a private car is not altered. Number plates to be issued for private cars in Auckland begin at 02,801, and continue to 70,800. Including plates for other types of vehicles, about 20,000 plates are stored at the bureau.
