BOWLING.

COMPETITORS FOR SYDNEY.

PAYMENT OF EXPENSES. OPPOSITION IN AUCKLAND. A, statutory meeting of delegates to the Auckland Bowling Centre decided last night to nominate Messrs. F. A. Hosking and . A. E. Whitten for election as two of the seven North Island non-official members of the council of the New Zealand Bowling Association. The election itself, if there are more than seven nominations, will take place during the last week of this month.

The president, Mr. A. E. Whitten, made regretful reference to the recent death of Mr. A. H. Yeoman, for many years treasurer of the centre, who had given unstinted service to the best interests of the game, and members stood in silence as a mark of respect to his memory.

Remits were received from the Wellington and Otago Central Centres for submission to the annual meeting of the council, recommending that a selected team of New Zealand bowlers should be sent to the British Empire Games in Sydney in 1938, and that a levy should be made on players to provide the expenses of the tour. Delegates expressed strong disapproval of tile suggestion that the expenses of the players should be paid, some holding that this policy inclined toward professionalism in a sport renowned for its amateur status. Delegates were asked to refer the matter to their clubs before voting on the question.

The executive referred back to the delegates the decision of the last annual meeting in favour of concluding the Christmas tournament on the one-life system, instead of the two-life. It was decided to take a vote after the delegates had brought the question before the annual" meetings of their own clubs.

It was pointed out by the president, Mr. A. E. Whitten, in connection with the statement that the prolonging of the tournament interfered with club New Year events, that the centre's annual Christmas fours tournament was one of the major competitions of the season and that it should take precedence over club tourneys.

In favour of the shorter method of deciding the tournament on the one-life system, one delegate expressed the opinion that such a procedure might increase the number of entries. It was felt by the majority, however, that those players fortunate enough to qualify for the post-seti-tion play would be given a fairer chance and better opportunity of enjoying their games under the two-life system. In a notice of motion by Mr. T. C. Schnackenberg, a suggestion was made that some means should be devised by which all clubs, including those in country districts of the Auckland Centre, would be enabled to take part in the annual pennant competition. Appreciating the difficulties with regard to travelling, should the country clubs be incorporated, Mr. Schnackenberg suggested that such an obstacle might be overcome by grouping several of the country clubs. They could then play three of the five pennant rounds among themselves, while they would be obliged to meet city clubs on only two occasions. The secretary, Mr. G. L. Gladding, said that he had been in touch with several of the country clubs and he had formed the opinion that there would be difficulty in inducing several of these clubs to ente. the competition, this applying especially to those in the Northern Waikato. Even if these clubs did join, he understood tha.. their entry would be on the condition that they were not forced to play among themselves, but came into opposition with city clubs. A country delegate present at the meeting supported Mr. Gladding in his latter contention. The motion was carried, asking the delegates to attend the next meeting prepared to discuss a scheme that would bring this about, and to indicate to what extent they would help the scheme, if it was found that the country clubs preferred to play all the five rounds against the city clubs.

MOUNT EDEN CLUB. Owing to wet weather the Mount Eden Bowling Club's two-Saturday tournament has been postponed until May 9 and 10.
