CITY V. PONSONBY.
The game on No. 2 ground was not productive of any brilliant football, play on the whole being rather ragged. Although the more penetrative methods of the City backs; particularly Lou Brown, at centre, and Rata, a recruit from South Auckland Kugby, who played a very sound game at first five-eighth, gave City an early lead of 17 points to 5, Ponsonby completely reversed the position in the second half and finally emerged the winners by 21 points to 17. , Ponsonby's success was due to the efforts of Halloran and Kay, the former being responsible for at least three of his side's five tries. Paton was safe at full-back and kicked three good goals. In the City rearguard Tawhai was fairly prominent and although he several mistakes he was too good for his opponents on a number of occasions and scored two fine tries. The City pack solid and showed promise of developing into a well-balanced scrum by the time the season is in full swing. Tries were scored for Ponsonby by Davis, K.ay, Holland* Leatherbarrow and Halloran Paton converting three. Tawliai crossed the line on two occasions for City, and Clarke, Rata and Porteous, another former Ru„b} plaver, were also successful. Wjberg kicked one goal. Mr. W. Simpson was the referee.
