FRUIT IN DEMAND
ORANGES BY MARIPOSA
HEAVY SUPPLIES OF CELERY,
There has been a fair demand for all classes of fruit this week, especially in the case of tomatoes which have been selling at high rates. Apples are rather dull of sale, however, .particularly the Delicious variety. Choice lemons sold well and there was also a much better inquiry for oranges. Quinces were in short supply and realised high values. The Mariposa brought a fresh shipment ot California!! oranges and grapefruit to-day.
The following are average prices of fruit sold to-day, some extra fancy lines bringing slightly higher values: —
Apples: Cox's Orange, 6/ to 10/ per case; Delicious, 2/ to 5/; Ballarat, 3/ to 4/6; Granny Smith, 3/ to 5/; Jonathan, 3/ to 6/; Munro, 3/ to 4/; windfalls and others, 1/6 to 2/. Pears: L.8.J., 6/ to 8/; Paekhams, 4/ to 5/; KeifYers, 3/ to 4/6; Winter Coles, 6/ to 8/; Winter Nelis, 6/ to 8/. Tomatoes: Outdoor, extra choice, local, 8/ to 10/6; others, 4/ to 7/6; Hutt, 6/ to 8/. Tree tomatoes: New Black, 4/ to 5/; Yellow, 3/6 to 4/. Oranges: Californian, 28/; Jamaican, 22/6 to 26/; Fiji, 10/ to II!/. Lemons: Choice cured, picked counts, 10/ to 14/; others, 3/ to 8/. Mandarine: Fiji, 18/ to 20/. Bananas: Ripe, 21/ to 26/. Grapes: To Kamvhata, 6/6 to 8/; hothouse, Hamburg, 5d to 8d per lb; Coleman, extra choice, 1/4 to 1/8; others, 9d to 1/2. Cape goosberries: 4%d to 5%d. Passion fruit: 3/ to 4/6 per ease. Persimmons: 3/ to 4/. Quinces: 8/ to 10/3. Chestnuts: 4d per lb.
Vegetables. The supply of celery at the city markets to-day was heavier than has been the case for some years past and it was almost impossible to quit supplies. Cabbage and cauliflower were also in heavy supply and sold at recent rates. There were good quantities of potatoes foiftvarded, the demand being good. All root vegetables were very plentiful and prices were a little firmer, but quotations for green peas and beans are easing slightly. Rates ruling were:— Beet, 6d to 1/ per dozen; celery, cooking, 3d to 6d per bundle; dessert, 9d to 2/; carrots, 6d to 1/2 per dozen; cauliflowers, 6/ to 7/6 per sack; cabbages,, 5/ to 10/ per sack; on benches, 2/ to 3/9 per dozen; cucumbers, 1/ to 3/; French beans, 2/ to 3/ per bag; stringless, 3/ to 7/; green peas, 3/ to 7/6; kumaras, 5/ to 7/6; le«ks, l%d to 2d per bundle; lettuce, 9d to 3/6 per case; marrows, 6(1 to 1/3 per dozen; melons, citron, 4d to 8d each; onions, 2/ to 3/ per bag; piclders, 4/ to 4/9; potatoes, Ohakune, Sutton's Supreme, 5/6 to 6/9; other varieties, 4/6 to 5/6 Pukekohe, autumn-grown, 3/0 to 4/6; 'medium, 2/ to 3/; pumpkins, Best Crown, 7/ to 8/6 per cwt; Reel Warren, 2/ to 4/ per sack: parsnips, 6d to 9d per dozen; radish, 3d; rhubarb, 1/6 to 2/6; spinach, 6d to 8d; spring onions, 6d to 1/3 per bundle; swedes, 1/ to 2/ per bag; turnips, 6d per dozen. Poultry. At to-day's auctions the supply of poultry was medium and the demand was fair. The prices paid remained practically unaltered. Selling rates were as follow: —
Cockerels: Heavy breeds, prime, 2/6 to 4/6 each; not prime, 1/ up; light breeds, prime, 1/9 to 2/9; not prime, 9d up. Fat roosters: Heavy breeds, prime, 1/9 to 2/6; light breeds, 1/3 to 1/9. Fat hens: Heavy breeds, 1/9 to 2/9; light breeds, 1/3 to 1/9. Pullets: Heavy breeds, best, 3/6 to 5/6; smaller, 1/6 up; light breeds, best, 3/6 to 5/6; smaller, 1/6 up. Drakes: Young, prime, 1/9 to 2/3; smaller, 9d up; old, 1/6 to 2/0. Ducks: Young, 2/6 to 3/0; old, 1/6 to 2/6. Butter and Eggs. There has been no change in egg prices on last week's quotations. Hen eggs: A grade, 2/3% per dozen; B grade, 1/11%; C grade, 1/7%. Duck eggs: A grade, 2/2% per dozen; B grade, 2/1%; C grade, 1/7%. Farmers' butter, 9%d to ll%d per lb.
