MANY CHANGES.
OCCUPATIONS OF WORKERS.
THE "DEVELOPMENT" FIELD. According to the "Economic News," which is issued Dy the Queensland Bureau of Industry, the most important of the many changes in the occupation of people since 1921, as disclosed by the 1933 census, are those .in the field of "development." It points out that in Australia between 1921 and 1933 the number of men dependent on employment in development works of all kinds increased by approximately 80,000.
Persons occupied in primary production in Queensland increased from 1921 to 1933 by 18,025, or 17 per cent. The gross increase was 27,070, to which sugar contributed 14,330. Primary producers of all kinds in 1933 were GO per cent of all persons producing commodities (including building) and 32 per cent of all occupied persons. In "development" works the nominal increase since 1921 was 10,001, the total being 39,507, but the latter figure probably includes many relief workers.
Services —trade, transport, tlie professions, etc. —took 40 per cent of all persons occupied. The aggregate was 157,275, of which 98,392 were males, and the increase since 1921 was 22 per cent. Occupied families increased by 18,411 to 75,084.
