PLUNKET SHIELD.

OTAGO GAME. WIN FOR WELLINGTON. i MARGIN OF 80 RUNS. i (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. The Plunket Shield cricket match between Wellington and Otago was continued on Saturday in good conditions. At stumps, Otago, in its second innings, had lost five wickets for 158. In its first innings, Otago made 188. Welling, ton made 319 in its first innings and 168 in the second. . Otago therefore required 142 runs to gain a straight-out win when the final day's play began this morning. At stumps on Friday, Otago had lost four wickets for 162 in the first innings. When play was resumed on Saturday the remaining batsmen went very cheaply, adding only 26 to the overnight score. Parsloe and Griffiths were mainly responsible for the collapse" of the Otago batsmen. Parsloe took four wickets for 37 runs and Griffiths three for 75. Wellington gave a very uninspiring display of batting in its second innings, Blandford (48) being the highest scorer. Of the others, Moloney was the only batsmen who shaped at all well in making 33. Bowling for Otago, Dickinson took five wickets for 78 runs and Dunning and Badcock two each for 34. With a deficit of 299, Otago began its second innings, with Saxton and Knight, The latter batted well from the start and compiled 24 in quick time. Three more wickets fell cheaply. Then Elines,, with Cavanagh as his partner, scored at a fast pace. Elmes was dismissed for 26. Cavanagh and Smith took the score from 107 to 158 at stumps (Cavanagh 52, Smith 22). To-day's Play. Ideal weather favoured the resumption of play this morning, when the wicket was in excellent order, and not giving the bowlers the same assistance as on the previous days. Cavanagh (52) and Smith (22) resumed for Otago, and played Wilson and Parsloe confidently, though Parsloe swung awkwardly on occasions. In Wilson's first over Cavanagh survived a confident appeal for leg-before, and in Parsloe's third over Smith snicked one on the leg side, Blandford just touching the ball with one hand. A ball which came up sharply struck Cavanagh on the wrist and sailed into O'Brien's hands in the slips. Cavanagh had been 107 minutes at the wickets and hit seven fours. The sixth wicket had yielded 72 runs, the Otago captain playing a valuable though not classy innings. Dunning started with a four through the slips'off Parsloe, but in the next over a rising ball came off his glove and was caught well behind on the leg side. 185—7—4. Uttley skied one close in off Parsloe, but the ball landed on the ground, despite the fact that Lamason was fielding at silly mid-off. Two balls later.he sent a short-pitched ball into Lamason's hands.' 197—-8 —8. Mills brought 200 up in 195 minutes with a single to leg. Gallichan took over from Parsloe (seven for 66), and his first ball Smith snicked into the slips, but Parsloe appeared to be asleep, and an easy catch was missed. The score at 12.15 p.m. was 209 for eight wickets. Otago's innings came to a close a quarter of an hour later, being 80 runs short of Wellington's total. Mills was deceived by a straight ball. Smith, who batted for 96 minutes, was caught well out on the leg side. Otago were all out for 219, leaving Wellington outright winners by SO runs. £ Scores: — WELLINGTON.
