The course was two rounds of a triangular one, from the clubhouse round a mark at the head of Shoal Bay, thence round a mark off Xorthcote Point and back to the clubhouse, about six miles. The wind was northerly and on the light side. On the first leg to the mark at the head of the bay Paremata was in the lead, followed by Lyttelton, Tauranga, Manukau, Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland, Otago, Plimmerton and Kaiapoi. Wellington, being served badly, lost her lead to Christchurch, with Manukau next. Lyttelton now did well by keeping closer to the weather shore, but lost her advantage, Tauranga and Otago moving up. Christchurch came about to port and crossed ahead of the fleet, sailing a good course with Otago and Tauranga next and Auckland fourth.
