FEWER UNEMPLOYED.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) GISBORNE, this day. Reporting to the Cook County Council, the engineer, Mr. K. F. Jones, stated that a further decrease had taken place during the month of approximately 45 in the total number of men paid by the council on the No. 5 scheme, the total per week at present being 205. The starting of clearing work on the Waipaoa River and the opening of the freezing works were no doubt largely responsible for the reduction in numbers. Should the proposals to recommence the GisborneNapier railway be realised it was probable that local unemployment would be considerably reduced.
