THE ACE OF SPADES.
Everyone knows that the ace of spades is different from the others. There is a story behind the ornate design of the ace of spades. First of all there has always been a tax or duty payable on cards, and in the early days the ace of spades was used for the Government duty seal instead of the wrappers which are used nowadays. All the aces of spades were issued from Somerset House, with the amount of duty (ajiything from 2/0 to G/) marked on them. In 1862, when the duty was reduced to 3d., the practice was dropped and wrappers were introduced. Then the various manufacturers of the cards used the ace of spades to display their trade mark. And this habit still prevails.
