PIGEON FLYING.
WELLINGTON OPEN RACE.
By far th? most important event which has taken place to date in the pigeon racing world in Auckland was the open race flown .luring latt week-end from Wellington, an airline distance of 307 miles, to Auckland. One hundred and twenty-tliree birds, representing 37 lofts, competed for a total of £27 5/ in prise money, much the largest amount yet competed for in a race locally. The birds were liberated at Wellington at 6.40 a.m. in line weather, but living against a northerly breeze, and the leaders arrived in Auckland m Just ten hours. This was an excellent performance considering Ibat the birds were an extra day ill tlie baskets due to the train from Auckland missing the connection with the Wellington train at Palmerston North. The race attracted considerable interest amongst the pigeon racing fraternity in Auckland and met with such enthusiastic support that it lias been decided to bold similar races regularly In future.
