NORTHCOTE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Northcote Borough. Council met last night, the Mayor, Mr. R. Martin, presid-

Deputy-Mayor.—Mr. E. C. Fowler was appointed deputy-Mayor in place of the late Mr. W. C. Ellis.

Home for Cripples.—Arising out of a request from the Rev. W. P. Rankin for co-operation in an effort to raise £15,000 to equip and endow the Wfl6on home for cripples, it was decided to reply that the subscription list opened some months ago would be closed shortly. Mr. C. A. Clark referred to the various applications for subsidiary efforts, and said it appeared to him that some people wanted to run-before they could walk. The main sum should be applied forthwith for the relief of cripples, instead of . waiting to build up a big fund. There were crippled children all over the p]ace : for whom something should be done at once.

. Speeding on Highway.—A letter from the Northcote District , High School Committee referred to the speeding of vehicles and the consequent danger to the children attending the three schools situated in Onewa Road. The letter stated that members of the committee were unanimous in testifying to the absolute disregard by drivers to the rules laid down, and the council was requested to take steps to mitigate the danger and also the nuisance of the dust caused by the speeding. The traffic inspector, Mr. J. E. Mays, said the general nuisance was caused by motor vehicles rushing for the cargo ferry. He had taken the matter up with offenders and there had been a marked improvement. Speed traps were prepared in Queen Street, and it was hoped that would have the desired effect without resorting to prosecutions.

Resealing Footpaths.—Resealing the surfaces of footpaths, estimated to cost £544, was authorised as follows:—Alma Street, both sides; Bartley Street, north side; Duke Street, north side; Gordon Road, south side; King Street, both sides; Princes Street, east side and part of west; Richmond Avenue, both sides; Rodney Road, south side; Stafford Road, north side to Richmond Avenue and south side to Denby Lane; Vincent Road, both sides.

Sanitation. — The health inspector reported "hat general conditions during his visits had been found to be quite satisfactory.

Power Loan—The Waitemata Power Board advised that a poll would be held on March 4 throughout the power district on a proposal to borrow £100,000 for reticulation and extensions, and £15,000 for advances to consumers.

Use of Motor Car.—Mr. A. L. Ellis, on behalf of his mother and family, offered the use of the late Mr. W. C. Ellis' motor car in the interests of the borough. It was resolved to convey thanks for the offer and to state that it would be availed of if occasion arose.
