CIVIC WELCOME.

HON. M. J. SAVAGE RECEIVED,

A particularly rousing reception was accorded the Hon. M. J. Savage at the Town Hall last evening, when ft civic welcome was given by the Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis, in his honour. The gathering was a very representative one and was most enthusiastic in the welcome •it accorded.

Members of Cabinet and their wives, Legislative Councillors and members of Parliament and their wives, city councillors and the wives and the Dean and members of the Consular Corps and heads of local bodies occupied the stage. Masses of bamboo and palms stood on either side of the stage, while pots of bright flowering calceolarias were ranged along the front. Prior to the official welcome, Mr. Trevor Sparling played organ selections, and items were also rendered by the Auckland Municipal Band. Later a party of Maoris gave a haka of welcome. When Mr. Savage arrived at the hall he was met by the Mayor and councillors and escorted to the stage.

Among the ladies on the stage were: Mesdames Averill, A. J. French, J. A. Lee, W. E. Parry, J. Trevetliick, T. Blood worth, H. F. W. Meikle, J. Park, W. T. Anderton, Arthur Rosser, W. A. Bishop, F. E. Lark, C. Robinson, Balfour Irvine, Murdoch Smith, W. J. Jordan, D. Alfrey, M. P. Hynes, C. A. Jeffrey, E. B. Gunson, H. <T. Kelliher, T. T. Garland, L. Coakley, C. Bailey, E. W. Moore, E. Aldridgc, W. McLean, J. A. C. Allum, M. Dreaver and Miss Ellen Melville.
