PROBLEM CLUB.

CHRISTMAS PARTY HELD. To bring to a close the activities for the season a largely attended Christinas party was held by members of the Problem Club ye*today. The function took place in the Milne and Choyce reception hall, which was beautifully decorated for the occasion with howls of sweet peas and gladioli. Christmas decorations added further to the festive note. On their arrival the guests were received by the president, Mr. V. M. von Stunner, assisted by members of the executive, and each was presented with a, small Christmas souvenir.

A particularly interesting talk on festivals in othor lands was given by Mrs. F. Bauer. In the Netherlands, she said, the principal festival of the year was December 5, St. Nicholas' Day. Parents filled their children's shoes with straw on this day, and put them in the chimney. The straw was removed by Black Peter, the manservant of St. Nicholas, who filled the shoes with presents. In China the New Year was celebrated in February. In Singapore, India and other parts of tho East the Tamils celebrated the Taipisum in the middle of the year. At this time the '•god" was taken from tho temple and driven through the streets by white buffalos, while tho Tamils beat and tortured themselves to wipe away their

sins. Europeans visiting the temple were given garlands of flowers, and the moneylenders and priests gave money to the poor, who wero housed in the temple during the festival.

A treasure hunt, arranged by Mr. A. Turner, was later enjoyed by the guests. Tho prizes for this were donated by Mrs. Turner and Mrs. Michaels. An enjoyable musical programme included recitations by Mrs. J. Allen and Miss Edna Craig, songs by Mrs. Osborne and Mrs. Ncllo Porter, and pianoforte solos by Mrs. Paul Reston. The accompanist was Mrs. McKinney. During the afternoon a bouquet of pale pink and dark red carnations was presented to Mrs. von Sturmer by Mrs. W. F. Beechey on behalf of the members.
