AIRWAY SERVICE.
PAN-PACIFIC SCHEME. OPERATING NEXT YEAR. ORIGIN Ali PLAN UNCHANGED. It is expected that the signing of the memorandum of agreement between the Government of New Zealand and PanAmerican Airways will be completed within the next few days.
It was announced in a cable message from Honolulu on Saturday that Mr. Harold Gatty did not expect the service to start in less than five years. In response to a cable sent to Mr. Gatty he replied: "Statement purported me entirely untrue. Original plans unchanged. Prospects entirely dependent on New Zealand Government."
Mr. Gatty is at present at Honolulu and has planned to leave for Pago Pago in the yacht Kinkajou, calling at several Pacific islands en route.
When the announcement was recently made by the Government that negotiations were approaching a coiylusion Mr. Lisle Alderton, the corporation's attorney, discussed the matter with Mr. Coates and with the officers of the various departments at Wellington. There was a clause under discussion providing that British aviation companies should have rights of entry into the United States' territory similar to those to be granted to the American company by New Zealand. Provision is also made for the service to start next year.
When the present negotiations are completed the agreement will be signed on behalf of both parties.
Mr. Alderton said this morning that all • the contentious clauses had been approved and he had sent a cable to the corporation in New York. It wa.s probable that a reply would be received by to-morrow.
