PAPAROA HOSPITAL.

MEDICAL SUPERINTENDENT. FIIESH APPLICATIONS INVITED. a (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) DARGAVILLE, this day. At a meeting of residents of Paparoa and district, convened by Mr. E. T. Birtles, a member of the Kaipara Hospital Board, when the proposal of the board to appoint a medical superintendent to tho Paparoa Hospital was discussed, it was resolved to request the Kaipara Board to defer the appointment until the canvass for members for a proposed medical club was completed. The resolution further urged the board to appoint a male doctor and to increase the remuneration for the position from ; £175 to £200 per annum, with the right of private practice. The opinion was expressed that a salary of £200, 1 with the guarantee of a further £200 ■ from the medical club, would be of great 1 assistance to residents in securing a ; resident doctor. ]

It was reported at a recent meeting of the Kaipara Hospital Board that two applications had been received for the position of superintendent of the Paparoa Hospital, one of which was from a lady doctor. Mentioning that the residents of Paparoa were opposed to the appointment of a woman doctor, Mr. Birtles moved that fresh applications should be invited for the position at a salary of £225 per annum, with the | right of private practice. Mr. W. Collins (Maungaturoto), who seconded the motion, said it had always been his contention that £175 was too small a salary for the position. The popularity of the institution had been increased, confidence restored, and the tendency for Paparoa residents to go to hospitals outside the board's district checked. The proposal to form a medical club at Paparoa, he added, showed a creditable disposition on the part of residents to put their hands in their pockets again. The motion was carried, Mr. E. G. Appleton opposing it on account of the higher salary. Mr. Birtles said that the formation of the medical club was contingent upon the appointment of a male superintendent at the hospital.
