POTATO PRICES.
CANTERBURY'S RECORD PAYMENT. At the present time (soys the Christchurch "Star-Sun") there is much speculation among the younger generation of farmers as to the present high price of potatoes and the probable price next year. Older farmers have seen many ups and downs, and are accepting the present situation as just another cycle, in their experience of potato-growing. The question of the highest price ever obtained by Canterbury growers for table potatoes has also come up for discussion, and one authority has stated that the highest was £25 per ton, but the year of this price was not stated.
The question was referred to the Department of Agriculture, and Mr. 11. McGillivray, Fields Superintendent at Christchurcli, stated ,that £25 per ton was certainly not the limit of high prices, as potatoes from Canterbury were shipped to Melbourne during the gold-digging days and were sold at £50 per ton. These potatoes were shipped by the growers, and the price mentioned is probatbly the highest ever obtained by Canterbury growers for table potatoes.
