At the boxing championships, Jenken, who represented Timaru in the welter class, and of whom great things were expected in view of his previous form, went down to Purdie after one of the best contests of the evening. Purdie was always on top, and present indications point to his being very hard to beat for the title. . Lindsay, in the heavy-weight division, carried a heavy punch in either hand, and, although Muir fought a gallant losing battle, he found the effort of giving away 261b in weight and of stopping some of Lindsay's solid rights too much for him. He staged a bright rally in the second round and staggered the Aucklander with a right swing to the head, but he was hanging on toward the end of the round. In the bantam-weight division Moran carried the fight to Greaney in the firei round, but in the second Greaney began to make use of his left to some purpose, and played a ceaseless tattoo on Moran's face. Moran appeared to be badly distressed at the conclusion of the round. The final round saw Greaney once more on the offensive, and scoring time and again with his left. It was difficult to understand how the decision in favour of Moran was arrived at.
