LEFT £100,000.

THAMES LAW CLERK.

MR. POULGRAIN'S ESTATE. TWO CHAB.ITABEE BEQUESTS. Probate was granted at the Supreme Court this morning in the estate of the late John William Poulgrain, retired managing law clerk, Thames, who died on September 4 last at Thames. The deceased's estate is valued at £100,000. The will provides for two charitable bequests, the sum of £250 being bequeathed to the vestry of St. George's Episcopal Chureli, Thames, and the Thames Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, in the latter case the £250 to be used for the benefit and advantages of the nurses' home. The remainder of the estate is left to deceased's widow and family. Well-known Resident. The late Mr. Poulgrain was one of the best known and best respected men _in Thames and his impressive personality made him an outstanding figure. Punctilious as regards dress he was known everywhere- by his tall "billycock" and frocked coat, and his tall trim figure could be seen regularly every morning as he strode down to his office from his home in Tararu Road, about two miles away. Mr. Poulgrain was recognised as an expert in mining law and was greatly respected in his profession. He was known, too, as a very keen business man. Mr. Poulgrain was born at Gisborne in 1859 and received his early education in Auckland. Coming with his father to Thames in 1809, he received further education at a private school, and in 1871, when only 12 years of age, he entered the employ of Messrs. MacDonal and Miller, barristers and solicitors. He remained with that firm and its successors, Messrs. Miller and Son, and Messrs. Miller, Poulgrain and Garland, for over 60 years. Mr. Poulgrain was actively interested in local affairs and was a strong supporter of the Anglican Church. He is survived by his wife, one son, Mr. Cecil H. Poulgrain, who is a partner in the present firm of Miller, Poulgrain and Garland, and one daughter, Miss D. Poulgrain.
