WHEAT DUTIES.
DWINDLING CULTIVATION. PROTECTION FOR FARMERS. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The question of protection to New Zealand wheat growers is being raided in the House by Mr. C. A. Wilkinson (Independent, Egmont), who has asked the Minister of Industries and Commerce, Mr. Masters, if lio-'is aware that notwithstanding the enormous protection granted to this industry, under the sliding scale of duties that not less than 60,882 fewer acres of wheat were sown last year, and that the yield decreased by 3,102,772 bushels compared with the previous year. Mr. Wilkinson also wished to impress on the Minister that last year's yield of 5,933,245 bushels- was not sufficient for the requirements of the Dominion for a full year, and suggested that in view of the unsatisfactory position, he would recommend the Government to abolish the present sliding scale, so that wheat and flour may be imported below present rates as fixed by the Wheat Growers' Association and the Flourmillers' Association.
