FAST TIME MADE.
SCHOOL STEEPLECHASE. KING'S college: event, One hundred and twenty-four runners competed yesti-rday in the annual steeplechase held by King's College at i.liddlemore. Some good performances were registered and the fastest time recorded is expected to approach the school record of 34.42, established by IBrowne in 1928. The conditions -for the event were ideal and the cross-country sections of the conrt.o, of slightly over six- miles, were (inn and fast. The 'lrst runners to he dispatched were on a 12.0 limit —an extension of 3.0 on the handicap of oroviouis years. The first ten runners home were:—McGowan, 7.0, 1; Duignan ii., -1.0. 2; Edwards. 4.0, 3; Hodgson, 9.0, 4; Rule, 5.0. 5; Sterling. 0.0, 6: McKay it., 0.0, 7; Alpe, 3.0, 8; Elliott, (5.0, 9; Orr lii.. 12.0, 10. Fastest time was registered ,l>y Dunning. The actual positions and the respective times will not be known until the stopwatches are cheeked. The limit competitors still led at the Papatoetoe end of Bucklnnd Koad, while the scratch runners, Dunning. McDell and Masefleld, were beginning to show up. The rough ground around the quarry and Gray's 1111 l tested the endurance of the runners and McGowan took the lead at the douMc gates, closely followed by Orr ili., Mt>rey and Edwards. The scratch men came through well, hut Everlss managed to displace Masedeld. The long stretch home along Riassey Bond saw the limit men gradually lose their lead and at Mangere Hall McGowan headed Hodgson, Kulc, Edwards and Dlngnan. McGowan was not seriously challenged on the run in to the finishing line in the school ground and was clocked in 11} miiintc-s r.head of his nearest rival. The remaining placed men finished closely. <•
