ROAD IMPROVEMENTS

WAITOMO ELECTORATE. £20,000 TO BE EXPENDED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) TE AWA.MTjTU, Wednesday. Mr. W. -T. Sroadfoot, M.r., has been advised by the Minister of Public Works that improvements to roads in the Waitomo electorate, involving a cost of £8335, are to be carried out immediately. The country contributions to the works amount to £910. In an 'interview, Mr. Broadfoot stated that standard rates of pay would be paid for the jobs—l 2/ for married men and 0/ for single men—and work would be provided for about 150 men. Following are particulars of the works:-—Waitomo County: Formation and metalling of the Te Kuiti to Taumarnnui road (Maiingapeehi-Waitomo to Poro-o-taroa) £070. county contribution £130; metalling Auhai South Road £1(510. county contribution £2SC; metalling Te Marama Road £3000, county contribution £300; metalling Owen Road £4lio. county contribution ni! Otorohanga County: Te Talii Road £2590, county contribution nil. Total cost £8335, contributions £910. With the object of relieving the settlers concerned, and at the same time providing relief for a number of married men. additional road work in the Kawhia County is to l>e carried out immediately. Instructions have been issued to tly district engineer to man these works by calling upon the Unemployment Board to draft suitabV married men who are shown on its resistor as unemployed and otherwise eligible for relief. If practicable, the works will be carried out under the co-opera-tive system, with rates based to enable a workman of average ability to earn the current standard rate of pay for married men on full time unemployment relief works. The works involve expenditure of a total of £11,210, and in no case has the county been called on to make a contribution. Each work 'will require the services of 30 men — 90 men all told. of the works are a<* follow: —Metalling the Kainiango Road (!} miles. £4000; metalling the Taumatatotara East Road 5 1-8 miles, £321; metalling the Taumatatotara West Road 4J miles, £4000.
