MINING DISPUTE.
EFFORT TO AVOID STRIKE. ROUND TABLE CONFERENCE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, this day. A round-table conference between representatives of the Martha Gold Mining Company and the Ohinemuri Mines and Batteries Union relative to matters in dispute as a basis for a new industrial agreement was opened at the borough chambers this afternoon. The company was represented by ill". R. 0. Milligan, who was supported by Mr. 11. W. Hopkins, mine superintendent, Mr. W. Morrison, acting-mine manager, and other ollicials, while the men's case was conducted by Mr. J. Roberts, secretary of the New Zealand Alliance of Labour, who had associated with hi in, Mr. W. Bice, secretary and workmen's inspector, Mr. E. Dye, president of the union, and members of the executive.
Delegates representing the Amalgamated Engineers' Union, the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners and the South Auckland Engine Drivers, Winders and Firemen's Union, were also present.
Formal notice of their intention to strike on Monday next was given the company following a mass meeting of the men concerned on Sunday. At the same time it was stilted that a satisfactory settlement might be reached in the meantime.
