GRAIN AND PRODUCE.

POTATOES VERY DEAR.

NOW 19/6 A CWT.

BRAN AT,SO SCARCE,

The continued shortage of potatoes is still the dominant feature of the local produce markets and seems likely to remain so for another few weeks. Fair quantities come forward regularly from the South—quantities that would be ampie for normal requirements, but as a consequence of the backward spring all locaj supplies are a few weeks late and the lull strength of the province's demand stm falls upon the South. The South Island is obviously feeling the strain or tins abnormal demand and the market there is virtually in the hands of vendors who can almost name their own figure. Jincc last week local values have advanced x-*i 10/ a ton and to-day local dealers are quoting 19/6 a cwt, much the lushest figure ruling for a decade. The demand for onions is at present being filled by Canadian consignments, which arrived by the Niagara and wlueu arc being parcelled out at about "a/per 1001b bag. A further shipment of Californian is expected later in the week, so there will bo no shortage in this line from now on, but priecs are expected to rule at close to the present figures.

Local millers report a slightly easier position in the demand for pollard, but bran is still in very keen request and there is a difficulty in fulfilling orders. A fresh shipment of Australian pollard arrived to-day by the Kartigi, which brought supplies from Adelaide and Melbourne. There has been no change in millers' or merchants' prices._ The marked for horse feed is steady ana unchanged. Wheat is still selling steadily at 5/7 per bushel through store. Merchants are keenly interested in the .announcement that the ■ Government intends to allow imports from Australia to the North Island through the Wheat Board, but so for no advice has been received on the all-important question of price regulation. Maize supplies are still somewhat restricted and values have moved up to 4/7 per bushel. Wholesale Current Prices. Pollard and Bran.—Mill prices: Pollardj £7 per ton: bran, £6 per ton.
